Who is a child psychiatrist?

A child psychiatrist is a doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating mental, emotional, and developmental disorders in children and adolescents. Their role is to assess the child’s mental state, make a diagnosis, and select the appropriate form of therapy, which may include pharmacotherapy or collaboration with a psychologist or therapist. A child psychiatrist helps not only treat serious disorders but also resolve emotional problems and difficulties with social and academic functioning.

Problems worth reporting

  • Symptoms of depression or low mood in a child
  • Anxiety disorders, excessive stress, or panic attacks
  • Concentration difficulties, hyperactivity (suspected ADHD)
  • Aggression, impulsivity, self-harming behavior
  • Eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia, compulsive overeating)
  • Sleep problems or nightmares
  • Social phobias, isolation from peers
  • Persistent learning and behavioral difficulties despite support at home and at school

What is a child psychiatric appointment like?

The first consultation with a child psychiatrist usually lasts 60 minutes and includes a conversation with both the parent and the child. The doctor takes a detailed history of the child’s development, health, family, and school situation. The doctor then analyzes the symptoms and decides on further treatment – this may include observation, referral for additional testing, recommendation of psychological therapy, or, in justified cases, initiation of pharmacological treatment. The entire process takes place in an atmosphere of understanding and support, ensuring the child feels safe.

  • ADHD diagnosis and treatment (including diagnostic tests, e.g., DIVA, MOXO)
