Who is a speech therapist?
A speech therapist is a specialist who diagnoses and treats speech, language, communication, and feeding disorders. They help children, adolescents, and adults who experience difficulties with proper articulation, delayed speech development, stuttering, reading and writing difficulties, and disorders resulting from neurological damage. In the case of children, a speech-language pathologist often collaborates with a speech-language pathologist and an educator to provide interdisciplinary support.
Concerns worth seeking attention for:
- Delayed speech development in children
- Pronunciation and articulation difficulties
- Stuttering and other fluency disorders
- Communication disorders resulting from neurological conditions
- Difficulties learning to read and write
What does a speech therapy appointment look like?
During the first visit, the speech-language pathologist conducts a detailed interview and a functional diagnosis, assessing speech, language, hearing, oral motor skills, and any communication difficulties. Based on the results, they create an individualized treatment plan tailored to the patient’s needs. Subsequent sessions include regular exercises and progress monitoring. Therapy can include both in-office exercises and homework guidance.
Speech therapy services include
- Speech therapy for children and adults
- Speech therapy for patients with brain damage or neurological disorders
- Educational therapy to support speech, reading, and writing development
- Oral motor skills assessment and exercises
- Exercises to improve speech fluency and articulation
