Who is a preluxation clinic specialist?

A preluxation clinic specialist specializes in the prevention and early detection of hip dysplasia in infants and young children. Hip dysplasia is an abnormal development of the hip joint that can lead to walking problems and joint pain later in life. The specialist assesses the risk, performs ultrasound examinations of the hip joints, and implements appropriate treatment or preventative measures to ensure the child’s normal development.

Concerns worth reporting

  • Incorrect positioning of the child’s legs during a checkup
  • Suspected hip dysplasia in infants
  • Prematurity or low birth age that increases the risk of dysplasia
  • Family history of dysplasia or hip defects
  • Limited hip mobility
  • Atypical gait in older children

What does a hip ultrasound look like?

The visit begins with a medical interview, during which the specialist assesses the child’s developmental history and risk factors for hip dysplasia. This is followed by a physical examination and a hip ultrasound, which allows for a thorough assessment of their structure and function. If necessary, the doctor recommends appropriate preventative measures or implements treatment, such as hip bracing, exercises, or monitoring the child’s development at subsequent visits.

FAQ

Hip dysplasia is the abnormal development of the hip joint in infants and young children, which can cause difficulty walking or pain in the future if not diagnosed early.

A hip ultrasound is recommended by the Polish Pediatric Society and is recommended for every child. It allows for early detection of changes in the hip joints.

A hip ultrasound is non-invasive and painless. During the examination, the child lies on their back, and the doctor assesses the structure and function of the joints to detect any abnormalities.

The ideal time is between the 6th and 12th week of the child’s life.

The frequency of examinations depends on the results of the initial ultrasound and risk factors. Your doctor will establish an individual follow-up schedule to monitor the development of your hip joints.
