What is an allergist?
Allergist is a specialist who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of allergic diseases. Allergies are an exaggerated response of the immune system to substances called allergens, which are harmless to most people. The most common allergens include pollen, dust mites, animal dander, certain foods, medications, and chemicals.
Warning Allergy Symptoms
Make an appointment with an allergist if you or your child notice:
- recurring runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes,
- rashes, hives, itchy skin,
- shortness of breath or cough that worsens at certain times of the year,
- reactions to eating certain foods.
What is an allergist appointment like?
An allergist appointment begins with a detailed interview, including a history of symptoms, previous illnesses, medications, and the patient’s lifestyle. The doctor then conducts a physical examination and determines the appropriate diagnostic tests, such as skin patch tests, skin prick tests, or blood tests for specific allergens. Based on this, a treatment plan is developed, which may include pharmacotherapy, allergen immunotherapy, and preventative measures.

FAQ
Why is it worth treating allergies?
Ignoring allergies can lead to chronic inflammation and a significant decline in quality of life. Symptoms such as a runny nose, watery eyes, hives, or shortness of breath impede daily functioning, affecting sleep, concentration, and overall well-being. Early treatment can alleviate symptoms and prevent serious complications, such as the development of asthma or secondary infections.
Are allergy tests performed immediately at the appointment?
Yes, with the exception of the skin prick test, which must be inserted and checked on specific days.
Are allergy tests painful?
Allergy tests are usually minimally invasive and cause little discomfort. Skin prick tests may cause slight redness or itching at the puncture site, which quickly subsides. Blood tests are completely safe and involve the collection of a small amount of blood, similar to standard laboratory tests.
How to prepare for allergy tests?
Most tests do not require any special preparation, but your doctor may recommend discontinuing certain antihistamines for a few days before the test, as they can affect the results. It’s important to inform your allergist about all medications you’re taking and any medical conditions you have had.
Can allergies be cured?
Complete recovery from allergies is primarily possible with specific immunotherapy, also known as desensitization. In other cases, treatment involves alleviating symptoms and avoiding contact with other substances.
