Lactation advice

Breastfeeding is a beautiful experience, but sometimes there may be more difficult moments along the milky way. It is in these situations that the midwife provides professional support, thanks to which breastfeeding remains a positive event for both the mother and her baby.

And what does the term “lactation advice” really mean?

The lactation consultation lasts 1.5 hours. The consultation begins with a quiet conversation and discussion of the current course of feeding the baby. The rest of the advice includes:

• examination of the child (assessment of the structure of the oral cavity and measurement of body weight)
• mother’s examination (breast examination)
• assistance in latching the baby to the breast and selecting the appropriate position for feeding
• identifying the causes of the lactation problem that occurred
• discussion of lactation recommendations to solve the problem
• referral for additional tests, if necessary, e.g. a swab from a lesion on the nipple
• if necessary, referral to other specialists (radiologist, surgeon, neurologist)

Is it necessary to prepare in advance for the visit? There are definitely a few things that will help the midwife have a better understanding of feeding and lactation during the consultation.

• It is important that your baby is before feeding during the visit! During a lactation consultation, the midwife observes breastfeeding, which allows for an appropriate assessment of the situation and detection of irregularities.
• For the visit, you should prepare the child’s health booklet and take the accessories that the mother still uses while breastfeeding, e.g. breast pump, nipple covers, bottle.
• If the mother feeds expressed milk or formula, it is worth taking notes about the portions and hours at which they are given.
