Breastfeeding is a beautiful experience, but sometimes difficulties can arise. In these situations the midwife provides professional support, thanks to which breastfeeding remains a positive event for mother and her baby.
What does lactation advice really mean?
Lactation advice lasts 1.5 hours. Consultation begins with a conversation and discussing the course of feeding the baby so far. The rest of the advice includes:
- examination of the child (assessment of the structure of the oral cavity and
- measurement of body weight)
- mom's examination (breast examination)
- help in latching the baby to the breast and choosing the right feeding position
- recognizing the causes of the lactation problem that occurred
- discussion of lactation recommendations to solve the problem
- referral for additional tests, if necessary, e.g. a swab from a lesion on the nipple
- if necessary, referral to other specialists (radiologist, surgeon, neurologist)
Is it necessary to prepare for the visit in advance? There are definitely a few things that willhelp your midwife get a better picture of feeding and lactation during your consultation.
- It is important that your baby is ready to feed at the time of the visit! During the lactation consultation, the midwife observes the breastfeeding, which enables the appropriate assessment of the situation and the identification of any abnormalities.
- For the visit, prepare a child's health book and take the accessories that mother uses so far during feeding, e.g. a breast pump, nipple caps, a bottle
- If mum feeds with expressed milk or milk formula, it is worth taking notes about the portions and the times at which they are served.
