Depression is a mental disorder characterized by low mood, loss of interests and pleasures, and decreased energy. It may co-occur with somatic diseases, worsening their prognosis. Depression can manifest itself in a variety of physical ailments, making it difficult to recognize. Screening tests such as HADS-M are used to diagnose depression in patients with somatic diseases. Treatment of depression includes pharmacotherapy and psychological interventions.
